The Sickle Life, an advocacy group to champion the cause of persons living with sickle cell disease in Ghana has launched its monthly sickle cell awareness program on social media.
The social media awareness by the group is to expose social media users to the reality of living with sickle cell disease in a credible and relatable manner through the experience of patient and doctor and empower them to make informed choices regarding sickle cell disease based on the knowledge acquired.
Sickle Life was registered as a Non-profit Organization in 2016 and has grown over the period to include several volunteers and writers, multiple social media accounts, participation in several sickle cell advocacy activities and a website, to consolidate all programs and activities.
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder affecting 300 to 400 million adults and children worldwide. 65% of Sickle Cell Disease carriers are in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Research indicates that about 90% of children born with Sickle Cell Disease in sub-Saharan Africa die before the age of 5 years.
