The National Road Safety Authority(NRSA) has launched its 2019 Road Safety campaign to raise the level of awareness ahead of the Christmas season.

The campaign was launched in Accra, at the Kaneshie Lorry Station under the theme:” Stop Road Accident now before it stops you.”

In an address delivered by the Deputy Minister for Roads and Transport, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover during the launch of the campaign, re-echoed that 1,500 deaths were recorded from road crashes between January to September alone.

“The deaths could have been prevented if road users had exercised self-discipline and demonstrated responsibility for safe road use practices and compliance with existing road traffic regulations”  he said.

According to him, government is very much concerned about the unsatisfactory narratives on the roads and is committed to introducing reforms in the areas of legislations, institutional and logistical capacity to help reverse the trends of deaths and injuries.

He noted, with Road Safety’s new status and mandate as regulatory body, the Authority is now able to exact obedience and sanction breaches of road safety standards.

He thus urged motorists and road users in general to uphold the tenets of the road traffic regulations for accident-free Christmas.

On her part, the Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority(NRSA) Mrs May Obiri-Yeboah said that it was the expectation of the Authority that all road users practiced safe road use in traffic during the Christmas season.

According to her, the yuletide is a risk season for road safety as a result of motorization and more travels often characterized by total disrespect for road traffic rules and regulations.

Over 400 personnel would be deployed by the Authority mostly in accident prone areas to scale up sensitization and education as part of the road safety Christmas campaign, she disclosed.

She said a crash-free Christmas was possible, should road users renew their pledge to be disciplined.
