The Christian Council of Ghana(CCG), has advised  the Electoral Commission not to yield to pressure from the two major political parties over the raging debate on the voters register, but rather ensure it only takes decisions in the best interest of the Ghana.

The CCG added that the EC succumbing to the  ‘entrenched positions taken by the two major political parties’ without proper consultation on how best we can restore the credibility of the voters register will put the future of the electoral register on the edge.

Speaking on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM, the General secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong said: ” At this point in time we’ll urge the EC not to be pressured by the two major political parties on their entrenched positions, however what is needed is for the EC to take bold steps that will seek to make the voters register credible enough to boost  public confidence in the process.”

The Council argued that whether or not the country deserves a new voters register ahead of the 2016 general elections must be decided by the Ghanaian voters and not the political parties.

According to CCG, the EC ought to follow the advice of the Supreme Court by ensuring that the register is credible for voting.

The EC has set another meeting for the last week of October during which the various political parties will be engaged in a forum to make its case either for a new register or not.

The EC last week engaged the various stakeholders in an Inter Party Advisory Committee(IPAC) meeting.
