The Kadjebi District Security Council(DISEC) has launched a manhunt for six Nigeriens under mandatory quarantine who have escaped from a holding centre at Asato in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region.

Information gathered suggests that Health officials had gone to check on them on Monday but found an empty house.

The Nigeriens were part of the 37 commuters who were arrested on April 17 and 18 in the district.

A joint security operation stopped them from going through one of the border outposts in the Kadjebi District into Togo and later held them for observation at a guest house.

The Nigeriens were reportedly returning from Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region where they polish finger and toe nails for a living, – a job they say they are not making money from.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Kadzebi, Maxwell Asiedu, in an interview reckons the suspects have not left the area because they didn’t abscond with the belongings.

“We’ve met as a DISEC and deliberated on it so we have concluded that we’ll hunt for them. We suspect they are still around because their belongings -slippers, charges, bags are still in the rooms.”

The police officer assigned to keep watch over the six said he’d gone out briefly to buy an item when the incident occurred.

Meanwhile, the Oti Region has recorded 13 Covid-19 cases.
