The Special Medical Ward in Eastern Regional Hospital -Koforidua has received a major facelift by Citizens of Koforidua- New Juaben in the United State of America.

The group renovated the interior of the ward, created Toilet and bath in each room, furnished it with Air conditions, Television sets, replaced the louvers, and affixed modern Interior Double Glass doors on each and painted the rooms to give it a more aesthetic view.

Hundred(100) pieces of cotton reusable bed sheets were also donated to the Hospital.

The Special Medical Ward created for distinguished personalities was ironically in a deplorable condition. Patients admitted at the ward reportedly complained about the dishonorable condition of the ward.

At a short handing over ceremony, the Project Coordinator, Solomon Gyamfi, said the purpose of the group’s gesture is to improve the delivery of quality healthcare to people of New Juaben and its environs.

He said the Citizens of Koforidua New Juaben in USA will continue to mobilize resources to support development back home to improve upon the living conditions of the people.

The Acting Medical Director of the Eastern Regional Hospital, Dr. Cardinal Newton, acknowledged that the refurbished Special Medical Ward was part of three wards that is the Kids and Maternity wards which needed urgent renovations, therefore, the intervention by the group is a big relief to the management of the Hospital.

He assured to implement good maintenance culture to ensure longevity to improve quality healthcare services in line with the vision of the Hospital -to be a center of excellence in healthcare delivery in Ghana.

Present at the ceremony were Nana Afriyie Fosua Kobour II -Obohemaa /Nifahemaa of Kwahu Traditional Area, Nana Twumasi Darkwa Gyaasehene of New Juaben Traditional Area, Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben South, Isaac Appaw Gyasi, Philomina Mireku-Head of Nursing among other Senior staff of the Hospital.

Currently the daily average OPD attendance at the Hospital from 826 in 2018 to 927 in 2019 with a corresponding increase in average daily admissions from 58 in 2018 to 59 in 2019. In 2019, the Hospital saw a general increase in all attendances. Whereas OPD attendance increased by 28,426 that is from 237,870 in 2018 to 266,296 in 2019, In-patient increased by 433 from 21,014 in 2018 to 21,447 in 2019.

The vision of Eastern Regional Hospital in 10 years, is to grow to become a postgraduate training center for the West Africa and Ghana colleges of Physicians and a teaching hospital for undergraduate training of doctors in collaboration with Mountcrest University (Ghana) and Penn State University (U.S.A).

As a result, the hospital is currently focusing on human resource training of specialist doctors, nurses, pharmacists and laboratory personnel as well as non-clinical staff.

The hospital is now equipped with modern equipment such as laboratory analyzers and Histopathology machine, laparoscopy machines, endoscopy machines for upper and lower GI, Fluoroscopy machines.

It is also making an effort to get a treadmill and other equipment for the physiotherapy department and equipment for Glaucoma center. With the incorporation of information technology and health, the hospital expanded its Health Information System (HAMS) to cover in-patients and viewing radiology images (PACS).
