The largest opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) has cast doubt on the EC’s scheduled date for the compilation of the voters’ register insisting it’s clearly impossible for this to happen.
Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Peter Boamah Otukonor told Kasapa 102.5 FM that the Nebulous information provided by the election management body on the exercise feeds into the suspicion that the EC is not ready for the registration.
“If you look at the C.I and compare to their perceived activities all things being equal we can get a certified register ready by the first week in December. And what time will you issue the writ of election ? Meanwhile the writ of election should be issued after you have a certified register. ” he told host Kweku Owusu Adjei on Anopa Kasapa Morning Show.
The Electoral Commission will begin the compilation of a new voters’ register in June 2020 ahead of the December polls.
This was made known by the EC during Wednesday’s IPAC meeting which was boycotted by the main opposition NDC .
According to the EC, the new voter registration exercise is scheduled to begin by the end of June by which time the C.I which is currently before parliament would have matured.
Commenting on the fallout from the IPAC meeting, the Deputy Scribe of the NDC said the EC is out of track already and would completely face imminent challenges with the scheduled date for the exercise to be rolled out.
“We have some 6 months to election, and they are still not able to give us specific dates. They don’t have all the accoutrements for the registration exercise and they have admitted that. Which machine are you going to use for the pilotting? What date have you chosen for the pilot?Which district would the pilot be held? Between what time are you going to undertake the pilot? And between what time are you going to generate all the problems. And between what time are you going to fix all the machines before we start the registration by the end of June. Somebody is clearly leading us to the slaughter house. The EC is heading us to the slaughter house. There is no way registration is coming on by the end of June. Because the EC is not ready. They don’t know what they are about.They are just completely confused.”
