The National Democratic Congress in the Volta region has lauded the selection of former Education Minister, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the party’s running mate for the 2020 general elections.

After a long wait and anticipations, the NDC on Monday, July 6, 2020 announced Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the one to partner the Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama following a meeting at the party’s headquarters in Accra, where her selection was approved by the National Council of Elders and the National Executive Committee (NEC).

The Volta region is regarded as the World Bank of the NDC with a large support base that has aided the party’s fortunes in Ghana’s politics since then and as a result, many argued the choice of a Voltarian Veep would be more appropriate to show some level of appreciation to the people of the region for their massive support for the NDC.

But Monday’s announcement of the former UCC Vice-Chancellor means the dream for Volta Veep is over.

Reacting to the news, the Volta Regional Secretary of the party, Mr. James Gunu says the leadership of the NDC and the party at large in the region is happy with the choice and would work hard to bring back the party into power.

“President Mahama couldn’t have chosen any other person apart from this woman, so we went through the process, if you look at Article (43) of our party constitution; it states clearly that the Flagbearer of the party shall choose his running mate in consultation with NEC and NCE. He has done his best, did a lot of consultations and has arrived at this fulfilling decision.

We commend him for that, the region is happy, the women are happy, everybody is happy about the choice of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang,” he told Starr News’ Faisel Abdul-Iddrisu on Tuesday.

He added that what the Volta region wants is development and the best person to partner Mr. Mahama for the execution of that agenda is Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

He said, “The agitations for a Volta Veep were about development and now we have a people’s manifesto. What it means is that what we are going to get would not be political independence but economic independence because the development agenda has been set and the best person to help prosecute that agenda is Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.”

Meanwhile, the national leadership of the Volta Caucus of the party has also assured Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang for their support while congratulating her on her selection.

In a statement signed by its Chairperson, Mad. Dzifa Attivor on Tuesday, the Volta Caucus said, “The NDC has remained a mass party with broad base support, especially amongst women across the country. It is therefore significant that our Flagbearer, has settled on you Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.”

The statement also added that, “It will be recalled that under the government of Prof. JEA Mills, we had the first female Speaker of Parliament -Madam Joyce Bamford Addo.”

According to Madam Dzifa Attivor, a choice of a woman as Vice Presidential candidate is “a great victory for the over 51% of the women of all walks of life in Ghana.”

Many other interest groups including the Volta women’s wing and the Ho West Youth wing have all joined in congratulating and pledging their unflinching support for the ‘John and Jane’ combination.
