Ghana’s Power Ministry is taking delivery of the Karpowership power barges promised by the government from Turkey at the Tema Port by  November, 10, officials have confirmed.

“Except weather and Marine issues, the power barges will arrive at the Tema Port by 10th  November. It is taking off from Turkey by October, 25 and we are expecting it to berth at the shores of Ghana early next month” the Public Relations Officer of the Power Ministry, Kweku S. Johnson reiterated on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM, Monday.

The barges he estimated will be cleared for operations between 10-15 days after it arrives by the November deadline.

“We are all expecting that by the November 10 deadline,  hopefully the power sector will get a  major boost with the addition of the emergency power plants.  We can hit the ground running with the power barge between a maximum of 10-15 days after delivery,” he added

The emergency power plant from Turkey has delayed more than necessary after the April, September and October 2015 deadline were not met.

The barges are expected to add a total of 225 megawatts to the national grid and will help in ending the country’s erratic power supply (“Dumsor”) of three years and counting.

The agreement with Karpowership is expected to save the country between 100 to 120 million dollars annually, officials say.
