The Jammeh to Justice Coalition led by the Center for Democratic Development (CDD) has expressed worry, the two major political parties in the upcoming elections have not made any commitments to seeking justice and compensation for the Victims’ families and survivors of the July 23 Massacre in the Gambia.
Addressing a news conference in Kumasi, spokesperson of the group Martin Kyereh took it hard at President Akuffo Addo for what he described as the president’s failure to take any meaningful steps to ensure justice and compensation for the victims since his assumption of office.
“What is even disappointing is that in December 2019 when he led a Ghanaian delegation to the Gambia, President Akuffo Addo told the media that he believed Gambian officials were complicit in the unlawful killings of Ghanaians. But he couldn’t do anything practicable afterward,” he averred.
He indicated “we are deeply saddened that various administrations of the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress have not done much to ensure Justice and compensation for us over the years.”
Mr. Kyereh insisted that the parties should collaborate with the Gambia to ensure Justice is served immediately or else they will be compelled to head to the ECOWAS community Court for Justice.
“We call on the presidential candidates in the 2020 election to commit to ensuring Justice and compensation for victims’ families and survivors of the July 22 massacre, if we do not see Justice soon from Ghana and Gambia we will be forced to take the case to the ECOWAS community Court for Justice, he asserted.
A Senior Research Officer with the Center for Democratic Development Madam Regina Oforiwaa Amamfo said that according to the Human Rights Watch and TRIAL International there was enough evidence that depicted the unlawful killings of the Ghanaians in Gambia. Pointed out that the delayed Justice for the vulnerable groups whose only crime committed was just because they were migrants is worrying and a denial of Justice.
Madam Oforiwaa Amamfo was however hopeful their call for Justice will yield the needed results of ensuring Justice for the surviving victims and their families.
