The opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) has dismissed claims about the alleged dual citizenship status of MP-elect for Assin North constituency, James Gyakye Quayson insisting he is a full citizen of Ghana.
“He is a Ghanaian in law and in fact and qualifies to be a Member of Parliament according to the laws of Ghana,” a statement issued by the Director of Communications, Kakra Essamuah said.
This is in response to a petition by the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asking for an inquiry into the alleged dual citizenship status of the MP-elect for the Assin North constituency.
There are speculations that Mr. Gyakye owes allegiance to Canada.
A writ sighted by Kasapafmonline.com and filed on behalf of the NPP to the Foreign Affairs Minister requested proof of any renunciation by James Gyakye Quayson as a Canadian Citizen prior to filing as an NDC candidate of the just-ended parliamentary polls.
“In view of the representation made by Mr. James Gyakye Quayson, we’re instructed to conduct an inquiry into the citizenship status of the said Mr. James Gyakye Quayson to ascertain whether at the time he filed his nomination with the Electoral Commission of Ghana, he(James Gyakye Quayson) had renounced the Canadian citizenship, and if so the documentary evidence to confirm that indeed, he renounced his Canadian citizenship prior to filing to contest as a Parliamentary Candidate on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress” the writ signed by Marfo and Associate said.
But the NDC in a reaction to the matter said the MP-elect “who has resided for some time past in Canada, renounced his Canadian citizenship since December 19th, 2019 and has accordingly been issued with a Renunciation Certificate by the Canadian authorities to that effect.”
The statement thus asked the general public and the Assin North constituents to disregard the misinformation being promoted by the NPP and circulating on social media.
“Remain assured that Hon. James Gyakye Quayson will be sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Assin-North Constituency on 7th January, 2021 to serve his full term as MP, the statement concluded.
