The Member of Parliament-elect for Assin North James Gyakye Quayson has been dragged to court for allegedly holding Canadian citizenship.

Mr. Quayson has flatly denied the claims of holding dual citizenship on many occasions.

The NDC in response to a petition by the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asking for an inquiry into the alleged dual citizenship status of the MP-elect for the Assin North constituency said the MP-elect renounced Canadian citizenship as far back 2019.

It said the MP-elect “who has resided for some time past in Canada, renounced his Canadian citizenship since December 19th, 2019 and has accordingly been issued with a Renunciation Certificate by the Canadian authorities to that effect.”

However, the complainant who is still in doubt and has resorted to the court said the MP-elect still held on the Canadian citizenship when he was filing to contest in the December polls.

The legal battle comes barely 72 hours to the swearing-in of MPs of the 8th parliament.
