The government has declared March 8, 2021, as a public holiday.
This is “in accordance with section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601)” a statement signed by the President’s representative at the Ministry of the Interior, Ambrose Dery said.
The statement further called on Ghanaians to observe the day as a statutory public holiday nationwide.
“In view of the fact that 6th March 2021 falls on a Saturday, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has by Executive Instrument (E.I), in accordance with section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601) declared Monday, 8th March 2021, as a Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”
Ghana’s Independence Day is celebrated on March 6 every year.
Independence Day is also a remembrance of the day that marks the declaration of Ghanaian independence from the British colonial rule.
However, this year’s celebration falls on a weekend, hence the government’s decision to push this year’s holiday to March 8.
Gov’t suspends Independence Anniv. Parade
President Nana Akufo-Addo has directed the suspension of the 64th Independence Anniversary parade due to the high prevalence rate of COVID-19 infections in the country.
All related activities of the anniversary have equally been suspended.
A statement signed by Deputy Director- Ghana Education Service, Mr Anthony Boateng entreated all Regional Directors to bring this important directive to the notice of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Education Directors and Heads of all institutions under their jurisdiction for strict compliance.
