The Public Services Workers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress is demanding urgent steps towards an agreement on the minimum wage and the base pay ahead of the budget statement on Friday.
Alarmed by the continuous erosion in the value of real wages over the years, the PSWU insists “that the salary component of the National Budget Statement must be negotiated and concluded by the Public Service Joint Negotiating Committee (PSJNC) before the presentation of the National Budget Statement.”
The resolution was passed during the recently held National Executive Committee(NEC) meeting in Kumasi on March 04, 2021.
The National Tripartite Committee is yet to agree on a minimum wage for workers and this, according to the workers is concerning to the union.
The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, will be reading the government’s financial policy statement for the year tomorrow.
Ahead of the Budget, the PSWU says it demands an enhanced base pay for the year 2021, relative to previous trends.
It, therefore, wants the Public Service Joint Negotiating Committee (PSJNC) to convene immediately to determine the base pay before the presentation of the Budget set for tomorrow.
According to the union, in order to maintain the relative harmonious industrial atmosphere in the country, government must expedite action on these matters before the National Budget Statement.
