The Parent Teacher Association of Wesley Girls’ Senior High School(SHS) has called on the Ghana Education Service(GES) to reconsider its directive given to the School authorities to allow Muslim students fast in the ongoing Ramadan.
This comes following the Ghana Education Service (GES) directive to management of Wesley Girls’ High School asking them to allow Muslim students to fast in the ongoing Ramadan.
Reports were rife that the headmistress of the school prevented a Muslim student from fasting during the ongoing Ramadan. The development sparked concerns among Ghanaians including some Muslim lawmakers.
The GES following the development asked school authorities in the country never to block any student from fasting be ye Muslim or Christian.
However, the GES statement noted that parents ought to sign an undertaking that they won’t hold the school liable for any adverse health implication of their wards as a result of the fasting.
In a reaction to the GES directive on Wednesday, the PTA cautioned that should the management of the school bend the rules to allow Muslims fast, it will rather open the floodgate for the school to be inundated with individual religious preferences and practices.
“The School should not be forced to compromise its rules and regulations to accomodate students’ individual preferences which border on religion. This is unsustainable,” the statement read.
