Notorious highway robbers terrorizing commuters in the Fanteakwa North District in the Eastern Region have reportedly attacked traders on Abuorso to Dedeso road.
The armed robbers laid ambush at a Police barrier, at a time police officers were off duty, disguised themselves as police officers to rob unsuspecting traders to the tune of Ghc36,480.
Locals are reportedly terrified and living in fear following the incident.
DCE must go
The youth in the district want the DCE for the area, Charles Oware sacked for not supporting the police to deal with widespread insecurity in the area.
Addressing the media, the Begoro Youth and Concerned Fanteakwa North Youth raised serious concerns about the growing insecurity in the district owing to rampant highway robbery attacks which have resulted in deaths, and injuries from gunshots.
They contended that the DCE, Charles Oware Tweneboah who plays an oversight role as Chairman of the District Security Council (DISEC) has failed in relation to the decade-old menace.
According to the youth, Police in the area is under-resourced to the point that, the District Police Commander is ‘homeless’.
The youth groups accused the District Chief Executive Charles Oware Tweneboah of exhibiting incompetence and failed leadership since his appointment four years ago.
They cited issues of indiscriminate dumping of refuse due to inadequate waste collection containers, open defecation owing to abandoned public toilet projects fearing the District could be hit with cholera during the rainy season.
Other issues raised are the lack of potable water forcing many residents to depend on the polluted river Osubin.
The fallen standard of education leading to mass failure of students in both basic and senior high schools, the hijacking of government scholarships, high unemployment rate among the youth, and teenage pregnancy were cited as part of the allegations against the DCE.
They stated that the DCE has failed to leverage on the abundant natural resources and tourism potentials in the district to create jobs and improve the living standards of the people and therefore called on the President not to reappoint the DCE.
