The Assemblyman for the Dziehe-Ablame Electoral in the Keta Municipality, Gilbert Korbla Keklie has threatened to sue the current leadership of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) for overstaying their tenure office.

The current National Executive Council was constituted in June 2019 following an election at the association’s 20th Biennial National Delegates Conference held in Sunyani. The election which ought to have been held earlier in December 2018 delayed for several reasons at the time.

But according to Mr. Keklie, the current National Executive Council has outlived its mandate since its tenure of office ended on June 15, 2021.

In a letter dated July 5, 2021, and submitted to the NALAG, the aggrieved Assemblyman stated that “As per Article 20 (4) and Article 18 (1) of the NALAG constitution, the Financial Year of the association ended December 31, 2020 and for which reason the tenure of the current National Executives of NALAG ended on June 15, 2021.”

Accordingly, the Assemblyman served notice that “…one month after the receipt of this letter if the 21st Biennial National Delegates Conference of NALAG is not held to elect new national officers of the association and the establishment of NALAG Secretariats at the District levels also mot done, I shall proceed to a law court to compel the National Executive Council and the National Secretariat of NALAG to act accordingly to the constitution of NALAG and also in the interest of all assembly members.”

Article 9(1) of the NALAG Constitution requires that National Delegates Conference “shall be held every two years not later than six months after the close of the Financial Year.”

Yet in 2019, it took threats from some aggrieved assembly members for the 20th Biennial Delegates Conference to be held even though the then National Executive Council had their tenure of office ending on March 15th, 2018.
