The immediate past Ghana’s Deputy Ambassador to China, Dr. Charles Dwamena has commended Ghana’s efforts in its vaccination rollout.

“We’ve passed the test in this pandemic as a nation,” Dr. Charles Dwamena aka Dr. China told host Bonohene Baffuor Awuah on Ghana Kasa on Kasapa 102.5 Fm, as Ghana readies to start the production of vaccines domestically.

For him, vaccine administration has improved in scale and efficiency saying he’s so impressed with Ghana’s vaccination rate.

“Even the big nations like India, China, Germany and others who produce vaccines as at last week had not reached 60% with vaccination rate. Germany, which produces vaccines, as at last week had not clocked 60% in their vaccination rate. China as at last week did not even reach 17%, even India as at last week had not reached 10%. But Ghana as at two weeks ago was inching 60%,” he said.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Tuesday, August 31, began the administration of the second dose of AstraZeneca vaccines to persons 18 years and above.

Those who qualify for this rollout are persons who received the first dose of vaccine from March 10 to March 29, 2021.

Meanwhile, Africa is set to miss the urgent global goal of vaccinating the most vulnerable 10% of every country’s population against COVID-19 by the end of September. Forty-two of Africa’s 54 nations—nearly 80%—are set to miss the target if the current pace of vaccine deliveries and vaccinations hold, new data from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows.

Nine African countries, including South Africa, Morocco and Tunisia, have already reached the global target set in May by the World Health Assembly, the world’s highest health policy-setting body. At the current pace, three more African countries are set to meet the target. Two more could meet it if they speed up vaccinations, according to WHO.
