Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) leader, David Asante has warned that the EC is treading a path that is threatening to the democratic principles upheld by the 1992 constitution by positioning itself as an institution that does not respect the civic right of Ghanaians to demonstrate in the country.

“We have not been invited to the EC forum that takes place today; another group Movement for Joint Action(MJA) that also demonstrated last week had already submitted 83 paged document on the voters register to the EC. The EC had earlier invited the group to attend the forum and make its case, but after it demonstrated last week, the EC called back and informed the group that it had been taken off the list of groups to attend the event. This is a clear testament to the perception that the EC no longer tolerates demonstrations in the country,” he told sit-in host Yaa Serwaa Akoto on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM Thursday.

Asante also flayed the EC for not being forthright on a decision yet, on the calls for a new voters register after one full year.

He says this clearly shows that the electoral body wants to collude with the ruling National Democratic Congress(NDC) to throw away the majority support for the compilation of a new voters.

Meanwhile, political parties and other stakeholders who have delivered proposals to the EC over the call for or against a new register are to make representation at the forum  to justify their positions.

The two-day event will start at 10:00 am – 4:00pm each day and will give the platform for invited stakeholders to argue their case on the current electoral database.
