President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, will today open the 2021 Second Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Winneba, in the central region.

The event will run from Wednesday, October 13 to Friday, October 22, 2021.

It would be under the theme, “High-Level Evaluation on Two Decades of Democratic Elections in the ECOWAS; Achievements, Challenges and the Way Forward.”

Over 100 MPs have arrived to participate in the ECOWAS parliament meeting.

A legislation against the extension of terms for West African leaders will be a front-burner issue among others in the extraordinary session taking place this week.

This follows the recent coup in Guinea after President of that country Alpha Condé changed the constitution to extend his term in office.

The development has called into question the potency of ECOWAS in putting its members in check.

Earlier, the leader of Ghana’s delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin disclosed the matter is high on the agenda of the impending meeting.

The Effutu MP and deputy majority leader of Ghana’s parliament whose constituency is hosting the meeting has reiterated ECOWAS Chairman, President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to ensuring term limits are respected.
