Some 60 selected master crafts dressmakers and hairdressers in the Akatsi North District of the Volta region have received some support items from the Member of Parliament for the area, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe.

The items which include sewing machines, knitting machines with cutter, hand dryers among others is an initiative by the MP with support from the Commission for Technical and Vocational Educational Training (COTVET) aimed at enhancing the work of the beneficiaries and also to expose their apprentices to the new technological equipment.

The items which were distributed to the beneficiaries on Thursday include 20 hand sewing machines, 15 industrial sewing machines with irons, 15 knitting machines with cutter, 15 hand dryers, 15 saloon chairs and sterilizers with other accessories.

Speaking to the media during the presentation, the MP, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe noted that the machines would enhance the performance of the beneficiaries and also boost their daily incomes.

He said, “For some time now, I have been receiving these kinds of requests from several craftsmen and women, especially the dressmakers and hairdressers that I support them with working tools. These are tools they are unable to buy themselves due to their high cost. In light of this, I approached COTVET and they have since responded by supporting me with these machines to be given to them.”

“These machines would enhance their work and boost their daily incomes by a large margin. It is part of the agenda to ensure that we support livelihoods in our attempts to reduce poverty especially among women,” he added.

He urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the machines and ensure that they are properly maintained; indicating that officials from COTVET would undertake period monitoring throughout the district to ensure that the machines are being used purposefully.

CEO of Be-Nice fashion home and a beneficiary of the programme, Mr. Wonder Agboada told Kasapa News that, “these machines would help us a lot because sometimes, we have work to do but we don’t really have enough machines and so our apprentices become idle. But now that we have these machines, they will use it while they better their crafts.”

Another beneficiary, Lucy, said, “I am a hairdresser and for some time now, I have not had enough dryers to work with. I believe these machines would enhance my work.”

As part of the initiative, some other young girls have been selected across the District and have been enrolled into apprenticeship with full support from the MP, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe.
