The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in the Ashanti Region says transport fares are going up by 20% effective Tuesday 10th May 2022.

The Ashanti Regional Industrial Relations Officer of the Union, Mohammed Kamal disclosed to Ultimate News he has express permission from national leadership to go ahead with the charges following the government’s inertia in meeting them.

“I can confirm that we are charging 20% higher in fares by tomorrow. As I speak to you diesel is selling at 51 cedis per gallon up from some 31 cedis early this year. This is higher than even petrol prices and directly affecting our businesses,” the IRO told reporter Ivan Heathcote – Fumador.

This will be the first time transport unions are compelled to unilaterally peg their fare adjustments after such arrangements were streamlined under the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).

Ultimate News can however confirm that some transport operators have already begun taking arbitrary charges.

A commuter who called into the station indicated, “In the morning I paid GHc3.20p from my home to Denyame. I just went back and they charged me Ghc3.80p.

The drivers, however, say they have bent back to accommodate the hardships of Ghanaians as they were initially pushing for a 30% increment.
