Chairman, Ade Coker

The Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Party Joseph Ade Coker has adviced embattled suspended National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Paul Afoko to team up with General Secretary Kwabena Agypepong to leave the NPP and form their own party ahead of the 2016 elections.

According to him, the recent events in the party have amply shown that the two bigwigs are no more needed in the party, adding that there is no end in sight of their woes, so long as they continue to be in the NPP.

Mr Afoko was suspended by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) for what the NEC described as his questionable leadership style which the NEC was convinced if not checked was sure to wreck the NPP electoral victory in next year’s polls.

Four members of the party namely Chris Arthur, Former TESCON-KNUST President; Adreba Kwaku Abrefa Damoa, London; Kwabena Afum Dankwa, London; and Kwame Baffoe, NPP Regional Youth Organiser, Brong-Ahafo Region have also petitioned the party to suspend Mr Kwabena Agyepong.

They claim Mr Agyepong is exhibiting gross misconduct, and engaging in deals tantamount to venality while in his elected position as General Secretary.

His “still holding out Paul Afoko as the National Chairman contrary to the position of the National Executive Committee”. (“Kwabena Agyepong has rubbished, and keeps rubbishing the suspension of Afoko from his chairmanship. This in our view is an act of mischievous contempt for the authority of the Party as a whole, including its elders, its leadership, and its structures.”)

Agyepong’s “taking unilateral decision as a General Secretary with particular mention of a waiver he gave to some party parliamentary aspirants and the launch of a party card” are some of the charges against the party’s Chief Scribe.

But speaking on TV3, the NDC Regional Boss Ade Coker stated that the two party executives who are known allies should be guided by the trend of events and advice themselves accordingly.

He said from proceedings so far, there was no way the party was going to reinstate Mr Afoko, adding that the only way the latter was going to remain political relevant, was for him to partner his bosom friend Kwabena Agyepong to form their own political party.

“ You know in 1979, there was the UNC and the PFP, …If I were Afoko, I will just leave the NPP, get President Kuffour, their General Secretary … .they should go and form their own party. This is because so long as they remain and this other faction is in charge of the party, they will never see peace. Afoko is never coming back, but he is the legitimate Chairman.” Ade Coker noted.
