Residents in some parts of the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta region are demanding a closure to the operations of Seven Seas Salt Ltd -an Indian-owned company mining salt in parts of the Keta lagoon.

The demand was contained in a petition presented to the MCE for the area on Tuesday morning during a protest following the death of a pregnant woman and three of her children in dykes allegedly created by the company in the lagoon when they went fishing.

The latest death bring the number of persons who have drowned in the lagoon this year alone to 6.

According to them the operations of the company have not only taken away from them their livelihoods but also pose danger to their lives.

The conveners allege that the company has ignored all warnings contained in a report from NADMO regarding their operations.
