President Nana Akufo-Addo has announced that Government is working to secure reliable and regular sources of affordable petroleum products for the Ghanaian market.

Consumers of petroleum products are reeling under huge pressure after some Oil Marketing Companies last week increased prices of petrol and diesel by about 10 percent.

For instance, GOIL and TotalEnergies are selling petrol at GH¢13.99 per litre while Petrosol and Engen are selling petrol for GH¢17.48 pesewas per litre and GH017.54 pesewas respectively.

For a litre of diesel, Petrosol and Engen are selling at GH¢1929 pesewas and GH¢19.44 pesewas respectively. The price hike has been attributed to the persistent depreciation of the cedi against the US Dollar.

But in a national address to the Nation on Sunday, President Akufo-Addo said the arrangement by his government when successful, coupled with a stable currency will halt the escalation of fuel prices and bring relief to us all.

He further appealed to traders to be measured in the margins they put on their goods in the wake of the high cost of living.

“I hear from the market queens also that another factor fueling the high prices is the high margins that some traders are slapping on goods, for fear of future higher costs. I say to our traders, we are all in this together. Please let us be measured in the margins we seek. I have great respect and admiration for the ingenuity and hard work of our traders, especially those that take on the distribution of foodstuffs around the country, and I would hesitate to join in calling them names. I do make a heartfelt appeal that we all keep an eye out for the greater good, and not try to make the utmost profits out of the current difficulties.”
