Fire has gutted shops near the railway line at the Kantamanto market in Accra destroying goods worth thousands of cedis.
The fire is said to have started around 4:35 am Tuesday and left many traders wailing over the loss of their items.
“We were called at 4:35AM and when we got here we realized that the fire was spreading so we called other fire stations to support our efforts. So currently we have seen fire tenders on the grounds trying all means to quench the fire.
“As you can see we have challenges accessing the main fire, but we are trying to extinguish the fire.” A. B deputy Public Relations Officer for the Greater Accra Regional Fire Service, Louis Kwabena told Starr News.
The Fire Officer however noted that they cannot tell what caused the fire since the firefight is still ongoing.
“We cannot speculate that after the firefighting is done we will have a thorough investigation even if we have to use a forensic method to know what caused the fire we will apply it.”
He added that there have not been any casualties so far either from his men or the traders.
Kantamanto Market is a premier second-hand market area situated in the central business district of Accra, Ghana.
