Four armed men apparently entered the Société Générale bank in Rosebank, Johannesburg, before fleeing on Tuesday afternoon.

Employees in the 1 Sixty building on Jan Smuts Avenue watched on as police with pistols and semi-automatic guns drawn moved in and began clearing the office block room by room.

A police chopper circled above.

According to police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini‚ five men armed with one rifle held up man in the lift and took his laptop and i-Pad.

The incident‚ according to people inside the building‚ happened at about 3pm.

Police were unsure if the suspects were still in the building and began searching.

An hour and half later‚ police had left premises‚ saying the suspects were no longer there.

Staff at the French bank Societe Generale‚ jittery after the Paris terror attacks on Friday‚ barricaded themselves in their offices as police searched for the robbers‚ said their risk officer Jeduthun Campbell.

“Many of the staff were shaken up‚” he said.

There were no apparent links to Soc Gen‚ however.

Dlamini said that police are investigating a case of armed robbery.
