Hotels and other commercial facilities in Ghana will soon be directed to adopt the use of biogas as an alternative power-generating tool, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Mahama Ayariga has said.

The move follows a directive given by President Mahama to convert septic tanks in all public schools across the country into biogas-generating facilities.

“One cow can produce enough manure in one day to generate 3-kilowatt hours of electricity; only 2.4-kilowatt hours of electricity is needed to power a single 100-watt light bulb for one day,” he told a gathering at the Valley View University in Oyibi.

Valley View University has embarked on a similar project, where the school’s biogas facility is being used to cook for their canteen.

What you need to know about biogas

Biogas is a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide, water and hydrogen sulphide produced during the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter.

Biogas can be recovered and used either directly for cooking, lighting or it can be transformed into any kind of thermal, electrical or mechanical energy.

It can also be compressed, much like natural gas, and used to power motor vehicles.

Methane is the valuable component when using biogas fuel.
