The Majority in Parliament has thrown its weight behind the controversial Electoral Commission (EC) Constitutional Instrument (CI) seeking to make Ghana card the only proof of citizenship for voter registration.

The Minority and Speaker in Parliament have raised issues about the CI arguing it will put impediments in the way of voters leading to disenfranchisement. The NDC MPs have vowed to resist the passage of the CI.

But addressing the media, Majority leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu argued there is nothing wrong with the clauses in the new CI.

According to him, nobody including the Speaker Alban Bagbin can stop the laying of the Constitutional Instrument in Parliament.

“Is the CI a Minority business? So the Minority has endeavored to confuse Ghanaians. We are shielding light on the CI, the import of it and it is our responsibility to do so. I will not say that the Speaker has no business on issues transacted in Parliament, I will not say that at all. Except to say that no Speaker has the right to also say that I will not allow government business to be transacted. No Speaker has that authority, period.

“The Minority say they will not allow it, I am not sure about that. Let’s under that what you are doing is providing further illumination on the CI. A lot of people don’t understand the content of it. So I will say there are a lot of people out there who are legitimately worried about the content,” the lawmaker stated.

The Suame MP however assured of continuous engagements with the Minority for a consensus.
