Former President John Mahama says he’s stopped attending Ghana’s Independence anniversary celebration under Akufo-Addo’s regime because the event has been politicized.

Mr. Mahama who boycotted the 66th Independence Day Celebration in the Volta Region on Monday 6th March 2023, said the celebration is a national solemn day and should not be hijacked by one political party.

“…I’ve stopped going to the Independence Day celebration because it has become a party jamboree. I went to Tamale, they told GBC to take the camera off me. They bus their supporters in and field the whole stadium. When I got into the stadium the place was quiet and they gave me some corner somewhere and they occupied the daiz. Any of them who came in, they shouted hey, hey, and I said I don’t want to be part of this party jamboree.”

“Independence is a solemn national celebration. We used to celebrate it at Independence Square and everybody who wanted to come could come. They, bus their supporters in, they have party flags and they are wearing party T-shirts, I don’t want to be part of a party jamboree. Nkrumah got us independence, I’m Nkrumahist, and I will attend an independence day celebration any day if it is not hijacked by one party,” ex-President Mahama said during his address at the National Democratic Congress(NDC) Professional Forum Dinner and Awards Night in Accra on Sunday, 5th March 2023.

This year’s 66th Independence Day anniversary celebration was held at Adaklu in the Volta Region.
