Some 471 Ghanaians, 32 being minors were rescued in the Mediterranean Sea between January and April this year, authorities say.

Project Manager of the Ghana Integrated Immigration Management Approach (GIMMA) Project, Kazumi Nakamura, who confirmed this at a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of offices for the Migration Consultation Centre, in Sunyani in the Brong-Ahafo Region said the trend was worrying.

African countries including Ghana continue to fight the issue of migration by its citizens through the high seas. In an attempt to crossover from Africa into Europe through methods including but not limited to travelling long distances on the high seas, lives are lost.

On 3 October 2013, a boat carrying migrants from Libya to Italy sank off the Italian island of Lampedusa.

The boat had sailed from Misrata, Libya. Many of the migrants were said to be originally from Ghana, Somalia and Eritrea.
