The blasts have caused a number of casualties and spread panic across the city, which was targeted by Islamic State militants in October when bombings killed more than 100 people.

Emergency services were alerted to the explosions at about 1.30pm local time.

The incident was thought to have occurred at a factory producing dry ice, with some suggesting it had been triggered by a gas explosion following reports of a smell of gas in the area.

Local officials said five people were seriously injured.

It comes a little more than 24 hours after a Russian jet was downed by Turkey after it buzzed Turkish airspace.

In October, two bombs were detonated outside Ankara’s main railway station, killing 102 people and injuring more than 400.

The bombing appeared to target a trade union rally and was the deadliest in modern Turkish history.
