Teenagers between the ages of thirteen and sixteen in many districts of the Central Region have deserted school and have resorted to hunting for rats and grass cutters to earn some money to take care of themselves.
Most of these truant teenagers are seen in the Ekumfi, Twifu Atti-Morkwa, Twifu Heman Lower Denkyira, Assin North District and Ajumako Enyan Essiam District standing by the roadside selling rats and grass cutters during school hours almost every day.
Those in Twifu Atti-Morkwaa and Hemang Lower Denkyira Districts are usually seen with dogs going into the Twifu Oil Palm Plantation in search of bush meat.
These young boys in an interview with EIB Network Central Regional Correspondent, Yaw Boagyan, said they’ve had to resort to go for bush meat hunting so they can sell to make ends meet as their poor parents are not able to provide their needs.
The boys further said though they would have loved to be in school, they are making good money from the sale of bush meet to Travellers which is used to help run their homes.
They disclosed that they usually sell between 5 to 10 rats and grasscutters a day, sometimes at GHC50 depending on the size of the animal.
EIB Network Central Regional Correspondent, Yaw Boagyan has observed that there’s been an increase in the number of pupils and students selling bush meat along the highways in the Central Region as compared to previous years.
It is expected that the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives in the area will step up efforts to get the students to remain in school to learn rather than deserting the classrooms.
