A professional bettor, Oboy Star believes there’s a spirit behind betting which when it possesses an individual, makes it extremely difficult for the person to stop the practice.
According to him, betting is so addictive that no bettor can stop the practice entirely but can only go for a break and return when he/she is in dire need of money.
Speaking on Ghana Kasa show on Kasapa 102.5FM/Agoo TV on Thursday, Oboy Starr who claims to have made good money from betting said the disappointment associated with betting after losing huge sums of money has left most professional bettors with health conditions including high blood pressure.
“Those who stake betting have a heart problem, everybody who’s a betting addict has blood pressure (BP) because of the uncertainty in betting and the money one can lose at a given time. You can do a check on any bettor’s PB and you realize that it is always high. Betting is not for the faint-hearted person; you need a strong heart to continue betting. Betting can drive one crazy to the extent that one can even destroy his or her own property after losing cash,” he told host Bonohene Baffuor Awuah.
Touching on the tax imposed on bet win by government, Oboy Star urged the government to scrap the tax off betting wins.
He described the tax as clueless arguing that because of the lack of jobs, betting had become a source of livelihood for the youth.
Ghana introduced a new measure that will see a 10% tax applied to betting and lottery winnings, effective Tuesday, August 15, 2023.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has outlined that this withholding tax will be automatically deducted at the point of pay-out for all betting, games, and lottery wins.
In cases where a game is cancelled and the player’s initial stake is refunded, or if the pay-out amount is equal to or less than the staked amount, the withholding tax will not be applicable.
To facilitate easy monitoring by the revenue authority, lottery operators are required to update their software to display the details of the amount staked, the winnings, and the tax withheld during pay-out.
