National Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Stephen Ntim says the party welcomes the apology rendered by a former Minister for Gender, children and social protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo.

The lawmaker has apologized to President Akufo-Addo and the leadership of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what she described as “inappropriate conduct” on her part last year.

But commenting on Adwoa Safo’s apology on Boiling Point on Oman FM monitored by Kasapafmonline.com, Chairman Ntim said though the apology is in order, the party leadership does not have the power nor is in a position to help her win the party’s parliamentary primary to enable her to contest the 2024 parliamentary election.

He added that the decision to make her the Parliamentary candidate for the 2024 lies solely with delegates in the constituency, adding that the party leadership cannot do anything about the decision that will be made.

“Adwoa Safo’s apology is in order; I really support her objective because she knows the NPP is the only party she belongs to. So, she is doing what is expected of her, I mean the apology and all that. But the decision for her to be elected the Parliamentary candidate and ultimately the Member of Parliament rests with the party delegates and the constituents.

“If the constituents accept her to be an MP once again despite all that has gone on, I as Chairman and the rest of the party leadership will back her with our spirits to become an MP. So, her fate rests in the hands of Dome-Kwabenya delegates, from polling station to the constituency level.”

Adwoa Safo, the Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya at the time the NPP needed her vote in Parliament to enable the government take major decisions, was rather posting regular videos of herself dancing and singing on Tiktok from her base in the USA.

She returned to Parliament last November after a year of staying abroad without “permission from the Speaker.”

Speaking in a video broadcast in the local dialect (twi) on Thursday, 14 September, the Dome Kwabenya lawmaker said her actions during the period was not intentional, considering the challenges her family was facing.

“I am using this opportunity to apologize to all of you. In the not-too-distant past, some of my conduct [was not appropriate]. I want to assure you all that it was not deliberate, and it wasn’t my intention to disrespect you.”

“A lot of things were going on in my life and in the life of my family. I am asking you all, in the name of God, to forgive me …” she said.
