Flagbearer hopeful of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ken Agyapong says the exit of former Presidential candidate aspirant, Alan Kyerematen from the party will pose a great challenge to the party come 2024 general election.

Alan Kyerematen a fortnight ago announced his resignation from the party to contest the 2024 Presidential election as an independent candidate.

According to him, the NPP as it exists now has very little resemblance to the party that he joined in 1992 as a founding member.

Some members of the party have called his bluff saying his exit from the party will not hurt the NPP electorally.

But commenting on the issue in an interview on Starr Chat on Starr FM with Bola Ray Thursday, Ken Agyapong stated that Alan Kyerematen being a stalwart of the party and has a strong base in the Ashanti Region will certainly sweep some of the NPP’s votes in that region which is the party’s stronghold.

“Anybody who tells you that Alan Kyerematen’s exit will not pose a challenge to the NPP, then the person is not a politician. You see, you can call his bluff but, on the D-day, we will see what will happen. In Ashanti Region, they [NPP] are just deceiving themselves. When they see Bawumia here, Mahama here, Alan here, Alan will sweep the votes. Let me tell you, Alan’s personality besides Ashanti region, people love him the way he is.

“With all due respect to Osofo Kyiri Abosom, he was not a politician, we didn’t know him, he came and got 3% of the votes in 2020 general election. How can you say that Alan will not get 10 to 15% of total votes cast, …of cause he will get that…I am a grassroots man, he going independent is a big problem for us. I will speak the truth and nothing else. Anybody who says Alan is not relevant in NPP so he should go means he doesn’t like the party.”
