Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Mustapha Gbande, says the election of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as Flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) is an extension of President Akufo-Addo’s third term bid for the Presidency.

“For we in the NDC we see Dr. Bawumia’s candidature as President Akufo-Addo’s term term bid for the Presidency. Dr. Bawumia is the one President Akufo-Addo can use to cover the wrongs he has done against Ghanaians. He [Akufo-Addo] knows that if any other candidate apart from Bawumia had become the Flagbearer, that person would certainly not cover his [Akufo-Addo’s] wrong deeds, the same way an NDC candidate will not cover his deeds.”

“So President Akufo-Addo set out to look for a candidate he can use. That is why Akufo-Addo and Ken Ofori Atta were strongly behind Bawumia’s candidature, even with that 38% of the NPP delegates voted against Bawumia in the just ended primary,” Mustapha Gbandi said in an interview on Ghana Kasa morning show on Kasapa 102.5FM/Agoo TV Tuesday.

He further stated that the NDC will not go to sleep simply because the NPP has elected a candidate who is not his own man.

“We will work hard and win the 2024 election on the strength of what we NDC can do for Ghanaians to make them comfortable. Ex-President Mahama while in office proved that he is capable of achieving this and he will certainly move Ghana to a high pedestal when he wins power in 2024 elections.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) during its Presidential primary over the weekend elected Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s Flagbearer for the highly anticipated 2024 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia polled 118,210 representing 61.43% votes in the Presidential primary held across the country on Saturday, November 4, 2023, which had about 210,000 delegates casting their ballot.

His closest contender, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Ken Agyapong polled 71, 996 votes which represented 37.41%.
