Management of Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has denied celebrating some first year students for being innovative by moulding functional coalpots.
Described as “a remarkable display of ingenuity and collaboration”, first-year engineering students at the university have showcased their skills by designing and moulding functional coalpots as part of their academic projects.
A project which forms part of their welding training from the basics to test their skills on metal cutting and welding after first semester training at the engineering faculty.
This piece of work has generated a lot of controversy on social media and the traditional question of the motive for the celebration.
The students, who enrolled in the Automotive Engineering programme, ventured beyond their curriculum to explore innovative solutions as part of their class assignment.
The group, led by Gladys Cobbinah and her colleagues undertook the task of moulding the coalpots.
Their dedication and teamwork were evident as they successfully presented their creation to the University Management.
The coalpots, a testament to the students’ hands-on skills, were handed over to the Registrar Mr. Ebenezer Kofi Boakye by the team.
This piece of project work has given the university management public backlash questioning the innovation substance of the coalpot which is already available at Suame Magazine and other market centers.
However, responding to the public backlash, Dr. Charles Obeng-Sarpong, Public Relations Officer for the University in an interview with GHone News denied celebrating the group led by a female but rather appreciated them for entering to male dominated field.
Prof. Owusu Ansah, Head of Automotive and Agricultural Mechanization Engineering Department said KsTU continues to be a hub of forward-thinking education, where students are encouraged to think beyond the classroom and contribute to real-world challenges.
He stressed the success of the first-year students in creating functional coalpots serves as an inspiring example of the university’s commitment to fostering practical learning and innovation.
Prof. Owusu Ansah disclosed the university will soon unveil its electrical three tyres vehicle under manufacturing.
