Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has announced President Akufo-Addo has failed to give assent to the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill, 2022 which sought to proscribe witchcraft tag in the country.
The Bill sponsored by MP for Madina Francis Xavier Sosu was passed during the last meeting. But months down the line, there has been no assent.
Addressing the House, the Speaker revealed a letter written to the presidency about the development has received no response yet.
Alban Bagbin consequently ordered for the bill which has resurfaced on the order paper to be taken through the consideration stage again to be removed immediately.
MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu accused President Akufo-Addo of breaching Article 106 of the constitution by failing to give his assent to the bill.
Majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained the president has a number of issues with the passed bill and has been seeking a meeting with the Speaker over the development. The Suame MP empathized the President has not refused to give his assent.
Speaker Bagbin asked the President to follow the dictates of the constitution to register his concerns over the bill and not seek to flout the same constitution.
