Akufo-Addo assenting to E-levy

Human Rights Organization, Amnesty International has charged President Akufo-Addo to as a matter of urgency assent to the Criminal Offences Bill 2022, which sought to proscribe the witchcraft tag in the country.

According to them, the Bill among others will protect persons accused of witchcraft.

The Bill sponsored by the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu was passed during the last meeting of Parliament.

But several months down the line, there has been no assent.

However, speaking to Starr News, the Country Director of Amnesty International, Genevieve Parttenteng said funding may be the challenge to the delay to assenting the Bill as she appealed to the President to pass the bill into law.

“There are points in the Bil that needs funding like psychosocial support for victims and other areas of the bill that will need funding from government. So, perhaps they are reviewing how that will be possible. Obviously when they pass the bill we need to develop a legislative instrument and developing it is a consultative process that will also require funding.

She added: “But we would like to appeal to the President to please rather sign the bill into law, then we can start looking at how to fund it through the NGO sector. We are here and we are ready to fund certain aspect of getting the bill to work.”
