District Assembly and Unit committee level elections in Nhyiaeso constituency in the Ashanti Region, which was set for Tuesday 19th December 2023, has been suspended by the Electoral Commission.
Sources at the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Electoral Commission disclosed some forms required from the electoral area concerning the Unit Committee were not brought to the office before the deadline creating a problem.
The situation has left several voters stranded in the Nhyeaso constituency in the various polling centers particularly those who left home at dawn to join queues.
The Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Benjamin Banor-Bio declined to explain why the exercise has been suspended when he was reached on phone by Abusua FM morning show team.
He said “Yes, we have issues with Nhyeaso constituency electoral areas elections. The elections cannot take place today, headquarters will issue a statement on that with all the explanation’’ he assured.
Angry candidates who invested huge sums of money in their campaign activities for several months threatened to sue the electoral commission for wasting their time, and resources through the campaign and later denied them the opportunity to vote.
Incumbent Kwadwo Boateng Assembly member for Sokoban electoral area in particular threatened to sue the electoral commission.
“We have campaigned for several months, printed posters and fun games among other things. Currently I have even cooked for my agents and my campaign team. Look at what the Electoral commissioner has done to us, she will meet us in Court’’ he threatened.
Voting according to the electoral commission was supposed to start at 7am across the country but in Ashanti region at 8am there are several electoral areas yet to receive their materials leaving electorates stranded.
Stranded electorate, political/social commentators and political parties’ serial callers are demanding explanation from the electoral commission over what they describe as a poor job done so far on today’s district Assembly and unit committee level elections across the country.
“What we witnessed this morning across the Ashanti region has given us a clue of what will happen in elections 2024. We can’t trust the EC to do a good job in elections 2024. We think the EC wants to sabotage the government because all resources the EC needed for the elections organization were provided by the government so where from this poor job?) Kwaku Asumadu asked Host of Abusua Nkomo, on Abusua FM, Kojo Marfo.
