Tension is escalating in the Akyem Oda constituency of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as Dennis Obeng Agyei, the sole contender against Member of Parliament Alexander Akwasi Acquah, faces potential disqualification over past allegations of using offensive language against the incumbent MP.
Despite an apology, a petition during the vetting process has led to the matter being referred to the constituency disciplinary committee for a decision within a week.
Supporters of Dennis Obeng Agyei vehemently protested the vetting committee’s decision to entertain the petition, issuing strong warnings that any move to disqualify their candidate would be disastrous for the party.
Dennis Obeng Agyei, speaking to the media, expressed surprise at call for his disqualification, emphasizing that he had apologized long ago and highlighting the community’s desire for transformative change.
MP Alexander Akwasi Acquah, addressing the media, remained focused on continuing developmental projects in the constituency.
He declared his commitment to securing a higher percentage margin for the NPP in the Eastern Region, increasing it from 79% to 90%.
In a related development, Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, is poised to contest unopposed after the disqualification of his sole contender, Yaa Ansa Safori.
The former women’s organizer is likely to appeal the decision.
Meanwhile, MP for Akuapem South constituency, Osei Bonsu Amoah is advocating for the disqualification of the Municipal Chief Executive, citing party regulations requiring MMDCEs interested in parliamentary contests to resign from their positions two years before the nomination period.
