Aspiring Parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Bekwai Constituency, Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah (Rtd) has denied accusing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of paying bribe to delegates to cause his defeat in the January 27 parliamentary primaries.

He has described the allegation published by an online news portal as a maliciously and diabolically written article which surreptitiously seeks to create a needless feud and disaffection between himself and the Veep as far as the upcoming context is concerned.

In a statement, COP Mensah (Rtd) said the fact is that a police vehicle with registration number GE 7243-19 was released from the Police Headquarters and sent to Bekwai constituency for a so-called SPECIAL EXERCISE. It was driven by Inspector Kwakye, who is the IGP’s driver with one Nana Osei Afrifa.

He added that Both Inspector Kwakye and Nana Osei Afrifa held a meeting with the delegates at the Alpha Guest House, opposite Bekwai SDA SHS where they made their intentions of their visit known to the delegates. Nana Osei Afrifa who co-hosted the meeting with Inspector Kwakye categorically told the delegates that they have been sent by the vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to inform the delegates that he, the vice president, was looking forward to working with a younger person who is ICT inclined.

COP Mensah (Rtd) added that according to Nana Osei Afrifa, the vice president, therefore wanted the delegates to vote massively for Lawyer Ralph Opoku-Adusei who is one of the four aspirants in the race in the upcoming primaries.

Having made their intentions known, they allegedly paid an amount of One Thousand Cedis to each of the delegates who took part in the meeting and indicated clearly that the money was given to them to be paid by the vice president in support of Opoku-Adusei’s bid.

COP Mensah (Rtd) stressed ”I therefore, want to state categorically that I have never mentioned anywhere that the vice president sent the driver of IGP Dampare to Bekwai to bribe delegates.

”The statement was emphatically made by Nana Osei Afrifa who came to Bekwai by the said police car with Inspector Kwakye who is the 1GP’s driver, under the guise of SPECIAL EXERCISE during the vetting of the aspirants.”

He said it would therefore, be weird if any persons or group of persons leave Inspector Kwakyc who drives the IGP and his accomplice, Nana Osci Afrifa out of this unfolding issue and rather make him a target.”

Read below the full statement

My attention has been drawn to a maliciously and diabolically written article which surreptitiously seeks to create a needless feud and disaffection between myself and the Vice President, His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as far as the upcoming parliamentary primaries of the NPP in the Bekwai Constituency is concerned.

The article, which was published on asempanews.com and other portals, alleged that I have accused the vice president of paying bribes to delegates in the Bekwai Constituency so that they would vote against me on the 276 January internal polls to elect a parliamentary candidate.

I, therefore, wish to respond to the malevolent and highly unsubstantiated allegations carried out in the said publication which has since gone viral and state the facts of the issue in question as follows:

I. I have not made any allegations against the vice president as being purported by some unscrupulous persons or group of persons with derivative motives who are obviously seeking to malign and impugn my candidacy to project and advance their political manoeuvrings in the nm-up to the 27th primaries where delegates would freely choose who best fits to lead the party as parliamentary candidate.

2. The fact is that a police vehicle with registration number GE 7243-19 was released from the Police Headquarters and sent to Bekwai constituency for a so-called SPECIAL EXERCISE. It was driven by Inspector Kwakye, who is the IGP’s driver with one Nana Osci Afrifa.

3. Both Inspector Kwakye and Nana Osei Afrifa held a meeting with the delegates at the Alpha Guest House, opposite Bekwai SDA SHS where they made their intentions of their visit known to the delegates.

5. According to him, the vice president, therefore. wanted the delegates to vote massively for Lawyer Ralph Opoku-Adusei who is one of the four aspirants in the race in the upcoming primaries.

6. Having made their intentions known, they allegedly paid an amount of One Thousand Cedis to each of the delegates who took part in the meeting and indicated clearly that the money was given to them to be paid by the vice president in support of Opoku-Adusei’s bid.

7. There is an audio clip which was recorded during the meeting on which they could be heard loud and clear detailing why they were there, who sent them and who gave them the money to be paid as bribes as well as the reasons for same.

8. I. therefore, want to state categorically that I have never mentioned anywhere that the vice president sent the driver of IGP Dampare to Bekwai to bribe delegates.

9. The statement was emphatically made by Nana Osei Afrifa who came to 13ckwai by the said police car with Inspector Kwakye who is the 1GP’s driver, under the guise of SPEC/AL EXERCISE during the vetting of the aspirants

10. It, would therefore, be weird if any persons or group of persons leave Inspector Kwakye who drives the IGP and his accomplice, Nana Osei Afrifa out of this unfolding issue and rather make me a target.

II. The audio clip is available while pictures of the vehicle as well as Nana Osei Afrifa who was driven to Bekwai by Inspector Kwakye who is 1GP George Akufo Dampare’s driver.

12. The audio which is readily available, could assist in any further investigations to authenticate the wholesomeness of their own allegations.

13. I. hereby. further state categorically that the allegation that the vice president. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia sent the IGP’s driver and Nana Osei Afrifa to pay money to delegates to support Ralph Opoku Adusei did not emanate from me but was contained in an audio clip which was recorded during a meeting in 13ckwai which had the IGP’s driver in attendance.
