A Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) Prof. Kwasi Jonah has backed a petition by the Seventh Day Adventist Church for a change in this year’s election date.

The Church argues that 7th December 2024 falls on a Saturday which is a Sabbath Day, a day dedicated to the worship of God which might disenfranchise church members.

Although some analysts have rubbished the petition, Dr. Kwasi Jonah in an interview on Morning Starr on Starr FM said the concerns of the SDA Church is legitimate.

”I am a Catholic, I’m not an Adventist but I want to say straight away that I’m very sympathetic with the case of the Adventist. Religious matters are very important to the people affected and our own constitution guarantees the right to worship freely. So, one way of dealing with this problem is…a solution was proposed as far back as before the 2016 election.

”Let us move our election for many reasons to November. Contrary to what people thought at time time, and even now as people think, it was not to November 7, but the first Monday of November so that Muslims, Adventists and Christians will say we are voting on Sunday we don’t want it, we are voting on Saturday or Friday I don’t want it and then the traditional believers will also say Tuesday’s the fishermen don’t go to sea our gods…So let us put it on first Monday of November. This is what they do in America, first Tuesday of November and then we all go and vote. I want to say straight away that both from the Constitutional point of view and religious point of view, the Adventist have a good case.”
