The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has directed party members particularly in Ashanti to desist from making sensitive comments about the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and other chiefs.
The caution follows alleged disparaging remarks made by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako aka Chairman Wontumi against the Asantehene.
During the party’s Ashanti Regional parliamentary vetting at Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s Campaign coordination office at Asokwa in Kumasi, Chairman Wontumi is said to have challenged the authority of the Overlord of the Asante Kingdom during a confrontation between him and Manhyia South Constituency Organizer, Alhaji Aboba.
He was alleged to have said he has built his own kingdom in the region, so he is not afraid of anybody, including Otumfuo.
“I have built my own kingdom, I have my own police and military, and I will speak my mind to Otumfuo if I disagree on an issue with him (Otumfuo)”.
The alleged comments has generated huge furore among a section of the public in the Ashanti Region who have called for Chairman Wontumi to resign for disrespecting the revered King.
Addressing a news conference in Kumasi on Monday, January 22, 2024, the NPP General Secretary Justin Koduah Frimpong urged party members to remain silent on issues bothering the Manyhia Palace and traditional authority in the Ashanti Region
He disclosed that the party’s heirrachy is on the grounds working very hard to have the issue resolved.
”I will use this platform to caution our rank and file of the party to desist from making any sensitive comment whether through mainstream media or social media, whatapp platforms and whatever means of communication regarding Nananom and in particular his Majesty and the party.
”The leadership of the party is on the ground and knows what to do to make sure that the respect in the region, the respect for our revered King is maintained, the respect for Nananom, the respect for the good people of Ashanti remains intact. This is a caution to our party members that no one from today has the right to go on radio to speak about sensitive matters about Manhyia and chiefs. That is the position of the party.”
