The Northern Regional branch of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) has hit back at the the General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) Fifi Kwetey for describing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a ”disgrace to the Northern Region”.
The former Ketu South MP Parliament, criticized Bawumia, accusing him of being untrustworthy and deceptive, which he believes does not reflect well on the Northern Region.
Speaking during the second day of former President John Mahama’s ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in Tamale, Mr Kwetey urged the people of the Northern Region to prevent Bawumia from winning the upcoming December elections by any means necessary.
“…and Nothern Region, you owe it to Ghana to ensure that a son who does not represent not your best image but rather represents a disgrace to the north should never rise to the leadership of this country because that will be a disgrace to the entire Northern Region.
“Northern Region, you need to do everything possible to ensure that this son of yours who is an absolute disgrace and humiliation to all of you never rises to become the president of this country. You have been blessed with a son who can be trusted.
He rather encouraged them to throw their support behind Mahama.
But responding to Fifi Kwetey’s comments at a press conference at the NPP Regional Party office in Tamale, the Regional Communication Director, Yussif Danjumah condemned the comment describing it as insults which should not be counternanced.
He noted that NDC General Secretary’s comment is a significant departure from the politics of ideas and data-driven argument espoused by Dr Bawumia as his campaign agenda for 2024 election.
According to him, Dr Bawumia in his seven years as Vice President has demonstrated unwavering commitment to the development of the North compared to the former president John Mahama.
Mr Yussif Danjumah reiterates that the NDC flagbearer is rather a disgrace to the north.
”Throughout his tenure as a Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana and as a Vice President in the past seven years, Dr. Bawumia has never been accused of any act of corruption or associated with any corruption-related issues. This is in sharp contrast with John Mahama. Although Mr Mahama labled Ghanaians as people with short memories, we still recall the episode of late President Mills, setting up a committee to investigate John Mahama who was his own Vice President for allegation of corruption and receiving kick backs from the purchase of a military aircraft (Embraer). Furthermore, we recall the shame John Mahama brought upon himself by accepting a Ford Expedition vehicle from the Burkinabe contractor, Jibril Kanazoe meant to influence the award of government contract to Mr Kanazoe. The Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice(CHRAJ) investigated this matter which found Mr Mahama breaching his own Gift Policy. Indeed, it is John Mahama who is a disgrace to the North and not Dr. Bawumia.”
He added: ”Ghanaians know that John Mahama is the one described in the Airbus SE bribery scandal as Government Official 1 found to have received kickback of at least 5 million Euros. This and many related instances marked monumental scandals John Mahama brought about himself and his family and how disgraceful he is as a Northerner. If Mr Fifi Kwetey is searching for someone who is a disgrace to the north, he needs not look further than within his party.”
