The president of the Drunkards Association of Ghana, Moses Drybone, is calling for the setting up of a six-member committee to investigate the substance President Akufo-Addo drank while delivering the State of the Nation Address on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.
President Akufo-Addo while addressing the august House of Parliament said: “I don’t drink alcohol. Everybody who knows me know that I don’t drink alcohol.”
This was after he started experiencing incessant coughs, hence requested for water.
Soon after he was served with water in a glass, he picked his glass of water to sip, jokingly declaring that what he was sipping was not alcohol and that he does not drink alcohol.
But speaking to Kasapa News, Moses Drybone who described the President’s comment as ”unfortunate” said he believes the substance the First Gentleman of the land drank was neither water or alcohol.
According to him it is only the establishment of an investigative committee that will confirm what the president drank and lay the matter to rest.
”Nobody asked the President what substance he was drinking. Why should the President think that Ghanaians may suspect what he’s drinking may not be water? One cannot understand why he made those comments.
”We are calling for six-member committee to investigate what the President drunk on the day he presented the State of the Nation Address. The committee will comprise officers from the Ghana Drankards Association, Food and Drugs Authority, Ministry of Health, Ghana Standards Authority, Council for Scientific Research, and the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to investigate the substance the President drunk, before we can draw a conclusion. We know that what he drunk was not water and it was also not alcohol.”
Moses Drybone emphasized that it would have been a major boost for the local beverage industry if the President had said he drinks alcohol because the beverage industry employs about 1.2 million both directly and indirectly annualy.
