CPP Chairperson, Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong-Kumankumah

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) is advocating for the compulsory inclusion of traditional oath swearing for all public office holders especially political leaders to deal with the ever increasing corruption canker ravaging the fabric of the nation.

According to the party, political leaders have over the years hidden under the guise of the Bible and the Quran when assuming office to perpetuate profligacy at the expense of the ordinary citizens.

The call was made when the National Chairperson of the party led some members to pour libation at the Independence Square to invoke the spirit of the Founder and first President of the country Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to ignite a sense of patriotism in all Ghanaians to mark the 67th Independence Anniversary of the country.

“Before the colonial invaders to hold of our land, we had African systems of upholding integrity and they worked. Our leaders now use the Bible and the Quran to swear oath when taking up public offices and only end up in corrupt practices knowing there’re no immediate consequences leaving the citizens destitute. If you cannot swear by the African system, there is no place for you in a CPP government,” National Chairperson, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Kumankumah asserts.

Corruption in Ghana has been rife since attaining self government in 1957.

Since 2017, the country’s score on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index has been on a downward spiral with a score of 40 on a scale between 0 and 100 which translates highly corrupt.

The score however rose to 43 by 2020 and has since remained until 2023.

Thus, when ranked among 180 countries globally, Ghana ranked 70th.

Against this backdrop the Convention People’s Party advocates for the inclusion of traditional oath swearing to guard against the menace.
