The rise in prices of food items such as Plantain and Beans “G)b3”, Tomatoes, Yam, Cabbage, Herrings (Amane) have resulted in an increase in the monthly food inflation recorded for February 2024 despite the country recording a drop in overall inflation for the month of February.
The Ghana Statistical Service had revealed over the last 12 months (i.e between February 2023 and February 2024) prices of goods and services in the country went up by 23.2% a 0.3% drop in the 23.5% recorded for the period of January 2023 and January 2024.
Over the last 12 months, both food and non food inflation have equally slowed down marginally to 27.0% and 20.0% respectively from 27.1% and 20.5% recorded for the period of January 2023 to January 2024, the statistical service added.
Month-on-Month inflation according to the service has also seen some decline, as prices of goods and services between January 2024 and February 2024 went up by 1.6%, a slower rate than the 2.0% rise of the prices of goods and services between December 2023 and January 2024.
But despite this slow down in overall monthly inflation for February, month-on-month food inflation has increased from 1.6% to 2.0%.
This, according to the statistical service, is fuelled by the rise in prices of vegetables, tubers, plantain as well as fish and seafood, which recorded monthly inflations of more than 3.0%
Food items including Yam, Fried Plantain & Beans (Gob3), Tomatoes and Dried Pepper (Red) recorded year-on-year price changes of over 40% and month-on-month price changes of over 3.0%.
