The Chairman for Federation of Kumasi Traders, Nana Prempeh, is advocating for the dissolution of the Board and Management of Kejetia City Market due to their failure to meet expectations.
In an interview with Kojo Marfo on Abusua Nkommo at Abusua965FM, Nana Prempeh expressed his dissatisfaction with the management’s performance, attributing the market’s challenges to their inefficiency.
Nana Prempeh emphasized that the management’s responsibilities include overseeing the daily operations of the market, ensuring proper insurance coverage, maintaining adequate fire safety measures, and managing congestion.
“The management should be up and doing; they have a role to play. They should make sure the market is insured, firefighting equipment installation is up to standard. In fact, the place is congested as a result of their poor management”, he stated.
He criticized the current management for their lack of proactive measures and highlighted the burden placed on traders who bear the financial responsibility for all market-related expenses.
“We cannot be clapping for this Management, as you know, we pay for everything in the market, including maintenance. We pay all the service providers, and anything involving traders’ payments is our responsibility”, he opined.
Furthermore, Nana Prempeh stressed the need for strict enforcement of regulations to address misconduct by traders, emphasizing the importance of upholding standards and maintaining a clean and orderly market environment.
He pointed out various undesirable practices such as improper waste disposal, unauthorized food preparation, and unsanitary behaviors that tarnish the market’s image.
“We traders are like old wine in a new bottle. Our attitude at the old Kejetia is what we are exhibiting in this new Kejetia Market. I engaged the maintenance officer about a pipe burst in the facility. There are some small holes in front of the shops where the water will pass after mobbing, but unfortunately, traders push their unwanted materials like banku in holes, obstructing the flow of water”
“Some women even urinate through the holes, and some people will turn around and say that the market is unsanitary. Some traders turn on heaters when their colleagues complain about it, they threaten to curse them. Some traders still prepare food or soups in the main market areas”, he stressed.
