The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Unions has directed the four Ashanti Regional Managers to boycott any meetings organized or chaired by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Simon Osei Mensah.

General Managers of Ashanti West, South, East, and Sub-Transmission are all automatic members of the Council.

The National Executive Committee of the Senior and Junior Workers Union of ECG held an emergency meeting and decided to bar the managers from attending Council meetings and also given them two conditions to follow.

In an interview with Kojo Marfo on AbusuaNkommo, Bismark Adomah, a Vice Chairman SSU National of the ECG, emphasized that the union would continue to protest until the Regional Minister apologizes for their grievances.

“We’ve already stated that as we move forward, we will upgrade it; this is just the beginning. If we do not hear back from the Minister, NEC will reconvene and make another decision”

He stated that the NEC had decided on two measures to be taken if they did not hear from the Minister by the deadline given.

The first measure is that all ECG staff across Ghana would wear red, and the second is that red flags would be displayed across all ECG buildings to demonstrate against the Regional Minister’s actions.

“After the NEC meeting, they decided that if we don’t hear from the Minister by yesterday, April 23, 2024 which was the deadline, two things need to be done, i.e., all ECG staff in Ghana will wear Red clothe, and Red Flags will be displayed across all ECG buildings to protest against the actions of the Regional Minister”.

Furthermore, the ECG Union has directed the Ashanti ECG to boycott all Regional Minister’s meetings.

He noted “NEC had instructed the four general managers in the Ashanti Region not to attend any meetings organized or chaired by the Regional Minister”.

However, Mr. Adomah clarified that the union’s actions were not motivated by hatred towards the Minister. Instead, they wanted to send a clear message to politicians to allow civil servants to do their jobs without interference.

He said “we don’t hate him, we want to make it clear to the politicians that, they should allow the civil servants to work peacefully”.

Amidst the ongoing controversy, all eyes are on the Ashanti Regional Minister as he prepares to address the pressing issue at a press conference tomorrow.

This high-stakes event follows a series of events, including the Red Wednesday protest workers of ECG started today, April 24,2024.
